Entertainers
« on: February 10, 2009, 01:13:31 PM »
It is very nice to get Entertainers at the Club.  Peg and I enjoy a bitta dancin`... But there`s the rub  So many Entertainers,ONLY seem to have a Repertoire of ``Disco`` Type  Thump Thump Music, and have forgotten or have never known REAL Dance Music  i.e. Waltz`s,Fox Trots, and  ORDINARY Quick Steps, plus of course the slow smooches, which lets face it, oldies HAVE to HAVE.  If maybe they could hold off the Thump Thump stuff until a bit later in the evenings, by then the Dancing Types, would be worn out, and the `Disco` types could get stuck in.
  Just a Thought   ????
The Two on the 7th. were very good, and a little more attention to Audience needs, would have made them VERY VERY Good indeed.
Harry
n.b. Reading a leaf outa JV,s book , would do lots of  `em no harm ?

I have fallen out with several entertainers (Driftwood the most recent) by suggesting they come along and listen to the way J Vee plays music that people like rather than the stuff they enjoy playing!
I diplomatically suggested they had the rest of the week to amuse themselves but when we were paying they ought to try and please the audience. Didn't seem to make much difference unfortunately!

Well done Anthony, never seen JV, but some of the acts do not seem to care what the audience wants.

Exactly the Point I was making !
The Entertainment should be aimed/directed to  US.
In general we ai`nt chickens, and our Dance Memories,,Joe Loss , Mantovani, et al. ete. etc were Bands, making MUSIC for Dancing. and all for US. and OUR Entertainment.
Nice if the Entertainers Repertoire could include some of THAT sorta music.
Lotsa Waltz, and Foxtrot stuff around.... THAT could make a great evening, It always did in my past. !
Power to the Elbows,  of such types. may they prosper
Harry
p.s. Loud ai`nt Luvly !

The quote re. Joe Loss was simply , thet THEY played `MUSIC `to Dance to, and thAt, no matter how big a Show Band they were !. The Tempo`s were correct..  I remember it well, we got our Knuckles rapped if we did`nt.
Entertainment is really rather like supplying food in catering,
Volume, wil not fill seats, It will always be Quality over Quantity, will have the `edge`.
AND if some of `em can find out where their Volume Controls are, then USE `em, I might not have to take out me Deaf Aids.
After all , music SHOULD be enjoyed, NOT endured.

Sorry! I have never been in one, so cannot comment.
I still say Music is to enjoy, not endure, and for Dancing, it has to be the right music, ca`nt do a Rumba to a Waltz time . At least not without Liquid assitance, Hic !

Slight discussion as to how I equate Music to Catering ?
Simple really !     We eat outa lot.
Criteria  ---  HPT  and  MPT   prime tests...
Order a Dish with Mashed Potatoe`s
Hot Food on a HOT Plate - --- Hot Plate Test Passed
Mashed Potato=== Nice and Creamy, NO LUMPS
and inviting one to eat it  ---MPT Test Passed.
And the Cuisine will in generaL EQUATE to the quality of that M.P.T.
MUSIC  TEST --- equally Simple
Apply the ------ Eh? Wot?  Test
How many time do You and Partner say Eh Wotdidjersay ?, per sentence spoken ?   i.e.---- Volume  Test ?      If a Lot --- it`s too DAMN LOUD.
Does the Music  invite  You  to get up and dance to it ?
Or does the NOISE make you want to be sick, and leave----
i.e. Quality Test ?  Simple ---- Quality before Quantity !

Driftwood on Saturday !
Confirms ALL the above.  Two reasonably fair Performers, with not a clue as to what their audience wanted, and apparently completely uncaring about them anyway.  WHAT ever happened to DANCE MUSIC ?
Thump, Thump, Thump !.    Take it or leave it .

For 4 years I was the entertainments  officer at my R.B.L. It must be the hardest job in the club.
52 bands 1 every Sat.night bank hollidays and xmas & new years eve.
You can not please every one some will  say that was a good band tonight and others say that was a
  load of rubbish.
To get a band that will play the music you want is very hard as they have a program fixed ic and thats
it. If a new band is playing it is best to let them know what you want long before they are due to
play. You are paying so you call the shots. But you will not please every one.
If you find a band that is well liked and plays the right music do not book them to often as people will
get fed up after a time.

I did say we wouldn't be having them again but we were honouring a booking. It's a shame as they are nice people and reasonable musicians but theyhave no idea how to  play to their audience. Unfortunately there is not a great choice in the area at present.

I am sorry that Driftwood proved to be such a disappointment and assure you we will not book them again.
As has been pointed out, it is a very difficult job to provide entertainment regularly and please everyone.
As well as receive bad comments it would be nice to get some feedback on entertainers who are popular.
PLEASE NOTE: St. Georges Day we are having a BBQ midday with John Lodge "Lodgie" and Rich Lucas. This was very much enjoyed last year, so please come along and enjoy yourselves on 23rd.
